Torn and missing shingles on a roof

Shingle repair: missing, blown-off and damaged shingles

Lost a few shingles in the wind, or found cracked ones after hail? A few missing or damaged shingles can be repaired without touching the rest of the roof.

Yes, a few shingles can be repaired

We lift the shingles around the damaged ones, take out the broken pieces and nails, slide in new shingles, and nail and seal them so they lie flat with the rest. On most roofs this is a small repair.

Shingles blew off? What to do

  1. Pick up a piece if you can; it helps us match the color and style.
  2. Take photos of the roof from the ground and of any shingles in the yard.
  3. If water is coming in, put a bucket under it and call us for a tarp.
  4. Call us to repair the spot before the next rain.

Why it matters soon

Under a missing shingle there is only a thin underlayment, and it is not meant to sit in the sun and rain. Baytown gets about 65 inches of rain a year and around 100 days at or above 90 °F, so a bare spot doesn't stay dry or cool for long.

Matching older shingles

Shingle colors fade and some styles are no longer made. We match the size and shape and get as close as we can on color, and we tell you before we start if the match won't be exact.

Fixed to hold in the wind

The Texas Department of Insurance's storm repair guide calls for wind-rated shingles (ASTM D3161 Class F or D7158 Class H), roofing nails with at least a 3/8-inch head and no staples, and shingles only on slopes of 2:12 or steeper. Baytown designs for a 150 mph wind speed under its building code. We fasten repaired shingles the same way.

Do you need a permit for shingle repair?

Not in Baytown, if only shingles are being replaced. The city requires a permit when the decking or any structural part is repaired. Rules differ nearby: Pasadena requires a permit when repairs cover more than 25 percent of a roof, and Deer Park lists roof work among jobs that need a permit. See Pasadena and Deer Park.

Shingle repair questions

Can you repair just a few shingles?

Yes. Missing, creased or cracked shingles can be taken out and new ones set in and sealed. It is one of the smallest roof repairs, as long as the wood under them is still solid.

How long can a roof go with missing shingles?

Not long. The layer under a missing shingle is not built to take sun and rain on its own, and Baytown gets about 65 inches of rain a year. Get it repaired before the next storm if you can.

Will the new shingles match my roof?

We match the size and shape and get as close as we can on color. Older shingles fade, so a small color difference can show for a while. We tell you before we start if the match won't be exact.

Do I need a permit to fix a few shingles in Baytown?

No. The City of Baytown does not require a permit for shingle-only work. A permit is needed when the roof decking or a structural part is repaired. Baytown Building Services can be reached at 281-420-6537.
